Pap smear and HPV testing in Nairobi
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when it is caught early. Our liquid-based Pap smears and high-risk HPV tests give you a clear answer in a single, confidential visit.
In brief
- A Pap smear checks the cells; an HPV test checks the virus that causes changes.
- Most women are advised to start screening from around age 21–25.
- Quick, private, and done in a single appointment — results are explained to you.
What is a Pap smear?
A Pap smear (also called cervical cytology) collects a small sample of cells from the surface of your cervix. Those cells are examined in the laboratory for changes that could, over time, develop into cervical cancer. It is quick, usually painless, and can be done during a routine visit.
What is HPV, and why test for it?
HPV (human papillomavirus) is a very common virus, and a small number of high-risk types cause almost all cervical cancers. An HPV test checks directly for the virus rather than for changed cells, which means it can flag risk earlier — often before any abnormality appears.
Pap smear or HPV test — what's the difference?
A Pap smear looks for abnormal cells; an HPV test looks for the virus that causes them. Many guidelines now recommend co-testing — doing both from the same sample — so you get the earliest, most complete picture in one visit.
Who should be screened, and how often
- Most women are advised to begin screening at around age 21–25.
- Screening usually continues until around age 65.
- If you have had an abnormal result before, or a weakened immune system, you may need more frequent testing.
- HPV vaccination lowers your risk but does not remove the need for screening.
Your recommended interval depends on your age, history and which test you have. We will agree a schedule with you at your visit.
